It is commonly used in veterinary surgery, as it reduces the pain induced by surgical procedures, leading to a faster, better quality recovery for the patient. It is a so-called mini-invasive technique, which involves inserting a small camera and instruments into the joints to perform the operation. The pain induced by this procedure is significantly less, compared with older arthrotomy techniques (complete opening of the joint), and recovery is also faster.

Arthroscopy is used as an exploratory procedure to look for abnormalities, but also as a treatment if necessary. Ask your vet for advice on whether this technique can be applied to your pet's problem.

arthroscopy

The main indications for arthroscopy are :

Osteochondrosis / osteochondritis of the shoulder, elbow, knee, hock ...

Elbow exploration and treatment of medial coronoid process fragmentation - Joint flushing (e.g. for arthritis)

Diagnostic exploration of joints (e.g. tendon or ligament ruptures)

Treatment of certain meniscus injuries

SHOULDER ARTHROSCOPY

Arthroscopy can be used to assess the joint surfaces and treat any injuries concomitantly.

Example of osteochondritis dissecans of the shoulder:

This disease, found in young growing dogs, is common in certain breeds (German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Labrador, English Setter, Rottweiler, Bulldog...). ). It manifests itself between 4 and 10 months of age as lameness of the forelimb with support, sometimes progressive in onset, and often improved by anti-inflammatory treatments. This lameness, often more marked when cold, is the result of pain caused by damage to the cartilage of the humeral head. Without appropriate treatment, lameness worsens, muscles atrophy and irreversible osteoarthritis sets in. The dog then suffers chronic pain.

Arthroscopy of the shoulder enables us to visualize the joint surfaces, check the condition of the cartilage and treat any lesions, while significantly reducing the risk of complications and pain for your dog.

Elbow arthroscopy

This is another problem often encountered in growing puppies. It corresponds to a growth anomaly, partly familial (genetic) in origin, which is expressed by an intermittent lameness that worsens over time. Pain is usually improved by anti-inflammatory treatments. The lesions most frequently present in elbow dysplasia are: joint incongruence, lesions of the medial coronoid process and osteochondritis dissecans of the medial humeral condyle. Arthroscopy is the treatment of choice for the elbow. It enables us to visualize the condition of the joint surfaces and to treat coronoid and cartilage disease where necessary, while limiting the pain associated with the procedure. Recovery is faster than with conventional techniques (arthrotomy).

Knee arthroscopy

Arthroscopy of the knee is indicated in cases of suspected rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament, damage to the extensor tendon of the fingers, osteochondritis dissecans, arthritis or meniscus damage. Here again, it enables a very good assessment of intra-articular structures and the treatment of certain abnormalities.

This technique can be used to explore or treat conditions in the joints.
