Main orthopaedic conditions

orthopedic cruciate ligament tplo dog

Orthopedic conditions are very numerous and constitute an extremely frequent reason for consultation for all pets.

The course of action remains the same, however, and it’s worth remembering that..:

A limping animal is an animal that feels pain. It can be mild if it limps a little, or very strong if it can’t get its paw on the ground. Animals don’t complain, but that doesn’t mean they’re not in pain.

An abnormal gait is not always linked to a purely orthopedic disorder. It may be due to illness or neurological disorders, for example.

In the event of a gait abnormality, it’s important to establish the exact origin of the problem so that it can be treated as quickly as possible and prevent any worsening. To do this, additional examinations are often necessary, including medical imaging tests such as X-rays, ultrasound, CT scans or MRIs.

The investigation of an orthopedic anomaly always begins with a consultation to gather information on the occurrence of the anomaly. This is followed by an examination of the gait in different situations and gaits. Don’t hesitate to film your animal’s abnormal gait, especially when the disorder is not permanent, as it is not uncommon for it not to be present during the consultation.

Certain conditions are more common in young animals, such as elbow or hip dysplasia. Screening at an early age is recommended for breeds at risk.
