Multidisciplinary expertise in urinary tract disorders
Veterinary uronephrology is the study and treatment of diseases of the urinary system (kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra), as well as systemic pathologies with renal repercussions. At the Agoravet clinic, this specialty benefits from a comprehensive, integrated approach, thanks to close collaboration between our internal medicine, surgery, imaging, intensive care and anesthesia teams.
Our aim is to provide specialized, rapid and comprehensive care for uronephrological conditions, whether acute or chronic, simple or complex.
Medical conditions covered
As part of our referral service, we welcome dogs, cats and NACs with a wide variety of urinary and/or renal abnormalities, including :
Renal disorders :
- Acute renal failure: ischemic, toxic, infectious or secondary to urinary tract obstruction (Feline Urologic Syndrome, renal, ureteral, bladder or urethral urolithiasis, tumors, etc.).
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD): all etiologies combined
- Congenital dysplasias and malformations: renal hypoplasia, ectopic kidney, renal cysts
- Polycystic kidney disease (especially in predisposed breeds such as the Persian): ultrasound evaluation and screening
- Glomerulopathies and tubulopathies (proteinuria, acidosis, Fanconi syndrome, etc.)
Lower urinary tract disorders :
- Recurrent or complicated urinary tract infections (pyelonephritis, prostatitis, urethritis)
- Urolithiasis (urinary calculi or sablosis): renal, ureteral, bladder, urethral
- Ureteral and urethral obstructions (stones, stenosis, tumors, urethroliths)
- Urinary incontinence (ectopic ureter, incompetent sphincter, neurological abnormalities)
- Feline idiopathic or inflammatory-mediated cystitis
- Tumours of the bladder or urethra (TCC, leiomyomas, etc.)
Complementary examinations performed on site
The Agoravet clinic’s equipment enables a complete, rapid and precise diagnosis, often as early as the first consultation:
Imaging :
- High-resolution abdominal ultrasound for renal and bladder morphology, obstruction detection, characterization of renal masses or cysts, and procedure guidance (punctures, drainage).
- Digital radiography: highlights radiopaque calculi, visualizes the urinary tract.
- Radioscopy (image intensifier): used in particular for SUB (Subcutaneous Urinary Bypass) placement
- Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) : detailed lesion assessment, particularly in cases of suspected ureteral ectopy, tumors or post-obstructive complications.
Biological analyses :
- Complete urine analysis (chemistry, density, sediment, crystals)
- Urine culture with antibiotic susceptibility testing
- Biochemical tests (creatinine, urea, SDMA, phosphorus, calcium, electrolytes, etc.)
- Proteinuria measurement (UPC), clearance assessment
- Systemic blood pressure measurement
- Hormone levels (aldosterone, cortisol, PTH, etc. in case of secondary damage)
Other complementary examinations :
- Ultrasound-guided punctures for cytology or renal biopsy
- Measurement of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in certain situations
Medical and surgical treatments
Depending on the pathology identified, medical or surgical treatment may be proposed, in coordination with the clinic’s various specialists.
Medical treatment :
- Intensive care resuscitation and stabilization for acute forms
- Appropriate fluid therapy, control of acid-base and electrolyte balance, blood gases
- Treatment of hypertension and complications of CKD (anemia, hyperphosphatemia, hypokalemia, etc.)
- Proteinuria management (ACE inhibitor, sartan, renal diet, etc.)
- Targeted antibiotic treatment based on susceptibility testing
- Personalized dietary monitoring (renal diet, urolithiasis, etc.)
Surgical treatments :
- Cystotomy and stone extraction
- Uretrostomy or urethrotomy for urethral obstruction
- Vulvar plasty for hooded or barred vulvas
- Ureteral ectopy surgery (ureteral reimplantation)
- Reconstructive surgery (stenosis, tumors, etc.)
- Nephrectomy for irreversible unilateral damage
- Installation of specialized devices:
- SUB (Subcutaneous Ureteral Bypass) for ureteral-vesical bypass
- Ureteral or urethral stents to restore urinary passage
- Cystostomy tubes for prolonged urinary retention
A multidisciplinary team for comprehensive care
Uro-nephrology cases are often complex and require a collaborative approach. At Agoravet, the various specialties work in synergy to guarantee optimal care:
- Internal medicine for etiological assessment and medical follow-up
- Surgery for reconstructive or decompression procedures
- Imaging for precise diagnosis and guidance
- Emergency and intensive care for critical cases
- Hospitalization with continuous monitoring and controlled infusions
- Specialized anesthesia, especially for unstable patients or those with renal failure
A clinic equipped to deal with any situation
Thanks to a complete technical platform and a structured organization, the Agoravet clinic is able to manage all uronephrology cases, from the simplest to the most complex, in optimal conditions of safety and comfort for the animal.
We remain at the disposal of referring veterinarians to discuss cases in advance, organize a transfer or ensure shared follow-up after investigation and treatment.
