Dog and cat brain surgery
Management of brain tumors and meningiomas in particular
At Agoravet Veterinary Clinic, our neurosurgery team has advanced expertise in the management of central neurological disorders, in particular brain tumors such as meningiomas.
Meningiomas are the most common intracranial tumors in dogs and cats. Although generally histologically benign, their location within the cranium can give rise to severe clinical signs associated with compression of cerebral structures.
Other types of tumor are occasionally encountered and may be treated surgically.
High-precision diagnostics
Medical imaging :
Thanks to our state-of-the-art technical facilities, including 1.5T MRI and multi-bar scannerwe are able to provide a precise diagnosis and fine mapping of intracranial lesions. Imaging is used to locate the tumor, assess its extent and plan the best surgical approach.
Stereotactic brain biopsies
In cases where the diagnosis of the lesion is uncertain, or where complete excision is not an option, we propose stereotactic brain biopsies. This minimally invasive technique enables targeted removal of tumor tissue, under MRI or CT guidance, with minimal risk to the patient.
Biopsies are analyzed by specialized veterinary histopathology laboratories, enabling precise identification of tumor type and the development of a personalized treatment plan, which may include surgery, medical treatment or radiotherapy.
Surgical management
Our surgeons perform craniotomy procedures to remove meningiomas, using microsurgical principles. Each procedure is preceded by a rigorous anesthetic evaluation and a multidisciplinary discussion between our experts in neurology, anesthesia, surgery and medical imaging.
Depending on the location of the tumor (frontal lobes, parietal lobes, olfactory bulb, etc.), the surgical approach is adapted to maximize excision while preserving functional structures.
Post-operative care and follow-up
Post-operative management is provided in a secure hospital environment, with close neurological monitoring, optimal pain management, and monitoring of functional recovery. A personalized follow-up protocol is proposed to each owner, including follow-up imaging examinations if necessary.
Prognosis
When surgical excision is complete, the prognosis of meningiomas is generally favorable, with a significant improvement in quality of life and prolonged survival in the majority of patients. In some cases, additional treatment (radiotherapy, medical therapy) may be considered.
