Special eye therapies for dogs and cats
Laser
The diode laser is used for prophylactic treatment of patients at risk of retinal detachment, known as preventive panretinopexy. In this case, the procedure is performed through the pupil, using a lens, and requires no surgical intervention. Retinopexy can also be curative, when it is performed during surgery for retinal detachment.
The laser can also be used to produce cyclo-weakening in the treatment of glaucoma (endocyclophotocoagulation) or cytoreduction in the management of ocular melanomas.
Cryosurgery
Cryosurgery is used to treat corneal pigmentation. In this indication, it is a far less invasive alternative to keratectomy. Cryosurgery is also used to treat certain ocular tumors and in eyelid surgery.
Cross-Linking
This extremely recent, non-invasive technique can be used to treat certain infectious keratitis and, in certain indications, is an alternative to medical or surgical treatment of certain ulcers.
Iontophoresis
Iontophoresis uses weak currents to facilitate the penetration of therapeutic molecules into the cornea or eye. The result is high concentrations of the drug in contact with the structure to be treated.
