Anamnesis:
Dog presented with balance disorder, head tilted to the right, ptyalism, ear sensitivity and horizontal nystagmus at rest.
MRI sequences :
The right tympanic bulla is filled with heterogeneous hyperintense material on T2 weighting (arrow), hypointense in T1 (arrow), with no enhancement after contrast injection except in the epithelial region.
Hyperintensity (arrow) is visualized ventrally at the tympanic bulla extended at the level of the long muscles of the head up to the periphery of the medial pterygoid muscle and the digastric muscle in T2 weighting. This hyperintensitý extends and results in a discrete mass effect on the nasopharynx.
Major, ill-defined enhancement of the hyperintense lesion (arrow) following gadolinium injection.
Conclusion:
Signs of right otitis media and internal otitis are found. Evidence of bilateral stenosis of both external auditory canals and major swelling most likely of inflammatory or infectious origin, secondary to otitis media.
Knowledge of lesions of the inner ear can be decisive in therapeutic choices and prognosis.
MRI is proving to be the examination of choice for exploring the various structures of the auditory canals.
The superiority of MRI vs. CT has been widely demonstrated in the analysis of the inner ear.
